A solar PV system design is included in the solar PV turnkey offering. This is the second step in the system installation after a site survey. With all the information from the site survey, customers requirements, local laws, electrical code and best practices the system designer will select the components and create a detailed schematic of your system. With this diagram and the electric specifications of the components the city and county permits are requested, the interconnect application is submitted to the local electric provider and ultimately the Venti Tech Solar installation crew use it to install the system and all interconnections. This is Venti Tech Solar’s core business and the best value to customers. The design options are many and every customer is unique. We don’t use a one-size-fits-all style of system design. From the most commonly installed grid-tied without battery to the mid-size to large commercial projects we work with you to meet your energy efficiency needs.
These are the most common solar PV system installed in homes and businesses. It provides renewable energy to the main breaker panel in sunny days, and this supplies power to the home or business. The excess energy is sent to the electric grid while the electric meter spins backwards crediting kwh (kilowatts hours) from the electric bill. During the night or cloud days the electric grid supplies power to the home while the meter spins forwards. This back and forth of power goes on during the billing cycle and at the end the resulting metered kw/h is read and billed to the customer. If the number is negative most local retail electric providers will mark it as zero (0) kwh used. This is called “Net-metering” and there are various models of this. Most retail providers will value kwh received at the same cost as kwh supplied, which is a great deal for the homeowner in the current environment. Keep in mind that the retail electric provider buys the kwh supplied to their customer at a wholesale price so they can recover their cost of doing business and report a profit to their stockholders. Thus, buying kwh from a homeowner at retail price is no business for them.
In mature markets where there is a healthy population of homes and businesses producing power and sending it to the grid, the electric retailers have interconnect agreements with these home and business owners to purchase excess power at variable rates depending on demand or times of the day. Texas is far from a mature market today.
With all the advantages of a grid-tied system, the main drawback is that without backup batteries when the grid is not present or failed the solar PV panels are disconnected and the home or business is without power, even if the sun is shining. This is to protect the grid repairmen from back-fed power from the PV system.
There is one basic reason for adding backup batteries to a solar PV system, whether is it’s a new install or a retrofit, and that is to continue to power your home, or parts of it, when the power is out and the sun in not shining. But there are more reasons, for example, when the grid failed the batteries, working with an isolator switch, will allow the solar panels to produce power when the sun in shinning. It is like having double backup systems, the batteries and the sun. The Isolator switch or module will separate your home’s electric system from the grid protecting the grid servicemen from your generated power.
Another reason it makes sense to add batteries to a solar PV system is that the newly signed into law Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 allows up to 30% for the cost of the battery system to be used as a tax credit against the homeowner’s tax liability. In other words, the same tax credit now available for solar PV systems also applies to battery backup systems. This tax credit was not available prior to 2022. One more reason to have solar plus batteries is living off-grid or close to it.
Living without access to an electric grid is today reserved to small or remote cabins where there is no grid presence or connecting to it would be too costly. Doing so requires a significant size backup battery and solar PV system. For extra reliance a different power generation source is used like wind or small hydro. A fuel generator is also incorporated to bridge extended lack of solar or wind energy. This kind of systems requires extensive planning and calculations and are the most expensive compared to grid connected systems.
Imagine buying at front all the electric power you will use in the next 30 plus years and doing so at half the cost of what it would be if purchased from the grid. That is what going off-grid means. You are the power plan owner and operator, and you own all the power generated by it. Off course, you don’t have to do it alone, Venti Tech solar will design, install and maintain the system.
We expect that more custom home builders will star offering homes built from the ground up for off-grid living. That is because of a combination of factors; the cost of solar PV panels and batteries keeps falling, the grid is becoming less reliable, and the local electric retailers keep adding roadblocks and fees to customers with power production systems. Add to these the roll out of purchase agreements where individual customers are paid wholesale price for excess power sent to the grid and the idea of off-grid living becomes more attractive. If this is your case count on Venti Tech Solar as your partner in the journey. The best off-grid systems take a wholistic approach, meaning the whole home design contributes to the efficient energy usage and management. Let our consultants apply their expertise to your home design for best results.
Backup battery systems are becoming more popular for several reasons, for starters prices keep falling due to new technologies and scale of production. Then the instability of the grid and lastly the newly signed into law Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 which provides a 30% tax credit of the total cost of battery backup systems.
A battery backup system can be designed and installed with the solar PV system, retrofitted to an existing PV system or installed without Solar. Battery backup systems include a manual or automatic disconnect, which is required to avoid sending power to the grid during a blackout or grid failure. Once the home or business is disconnected from the grid, in a gird failure scenario, the batteries with a built-in inverter provide power the home or business. This could be a whole-home backup system using a substantial size battery bank or partial backup to power critical loads with a modest battery bank. These loads are selected by the customer like medical equipment, food preservation, lights, water pumps, Etc. Talk to your system designer about backup batteries.

Adding a fuel-based generator (diesel, natural gas, propane) is an extra layer of backup power for a home or business after backup batteries. Fuel generators are losing ground to batteries for some reasons. For example, batteries are silent and require no maintenance. Generators require fuel and regular maintenance to keep them in working condition. Nevertheless, when electric power is required beyond what the solar PV and battery backup can provide then fuel generators fill the gap until the sun comes up or the grid is restored.
Fuel generators can be controlled by the battery backup system to start and stop on demand or can be configured for manual intervention. In the later, the homeowner would start and stop the fuel generator to provide power to the whole home or a subpanel of critical circuits.
Electric vehicles are mainstream now. Car manufacturers recognize this and now are releasing record number of EV models every year. The newly signed into law Inflation Release Act of 2022 includes tax credits for the purchase of new and use EVs which makes these price competitive compared to their internal combustion, fossil fuel counterpart. Advancements in charging technologies are also offering the option of using the energy stored in these EV vehicles as backup power for grid failures with the use of bi-directional chargers. These devices coupled with electric vehicles features (hardware and software) allows electricity to flow in or out of the EV’s battery on demand. EV chargers also can be programed to use scheduled charging, and thus, when electric rates are lowest.
Venti Tech Solar can design and install an EV charging solution to fit your needs. Whether is to charge multiple EVs, use solar PV production only or a combination of schedule and source. The EV charger installation is most cost efficient when is done during the solar PV design and installation is done, so ask your designer for a quote including EV charging.
Solar PV systems require very little maintenance. They have no moving parts and the panels, inverters and disconnects are well tested and certified for safety and longevity. Nevertheless, it happens, a component fails, a panel is not producing as expected, an unfamiliar noise is coming out of the inverter, Etc. Whether it is to diagnose a problem or replace a damaged component give us a call. When you need a new company to service your system we are here to service you. Our technician will ask you some preliminary questions about the system and schedule a free consultation. From that visit to survey the issue we will present you with an estimate of the repair for your consideration. No obligation.
If your consultation includes a system expansion or new component, EV charger, battery backup, Etc., then we should be able to perform the fix with the system expansion and wave the cost of the repair.
When you purchase a turnkey solar PV system from Venti Tech Solar the installation of the panels on your roof is included in the project, that is a given, unless your project is a ground mounted system. But there are circumstances when panels needs to come down for a roof surface replacement, for example. Or in the very unlikely event that they get damaged by hail or other nature related event. In those situations, we can remove the panels and reinstall them once the roof work is done. There is no system re-design, no city or county permits to pull or components to replace, it is just a temporary dismount followed by a remount.
It has been said before “The best watt of energy is the one you don’t need”. Why install a 15 Kw PV system if a 14 kw provides all current and future energy needs, correct? Very often, and specially, in older homes there are energy efficiency projects that can be done which substantially reduce the home energy needs before, or instead, of installing a solar PV system.
During an energy audit our experts go over the elements that affect energy consumption in the home. Some of these are obvious, the HVAC system, the building envelop, windows and doors, Etc. Some others require a trained eye and expertise to see the whole picture and how they work together, for example: Home orientation, roofing material, living schedules, age of appliances and more. Do you have a room that is hard to keep cool? maybe there is a bathroom that is too cold all year around. Maybe there is an air circulation problem or a broken seal window.
The energy audit deliverable is a report detailing the elements that were analyzed together with a grading system to benchmark its operation. The report also includes a list of recommended actions that will improve the energy use of the home or business.
If you are building a new home, our experts can analyze the design choices and calculations to improve the building energy efficiency. Home builders often overlook the long-term implications of their choices in the energy use of their homes. It is possible and economically viable to implement energy saving techniques during the home building and still create a beautiful, modern and affordable homes.
Ask your solar designer about an energy audit for additional information.
